About a week ago, Beast in Black released their newest album, Dark Connection. This is the band's third album. It's a bit more cyberpunky as opposed to fantasy themes compared to their previous albums but still has its fair share of, you guessed it, Berserk songs.

If you're wondering why this is posted here, that's because founder Anton Kabanen features anime and manga heavily in his themes. Directly in the press release for Dark Connection, Beast in Black calls out a variety of anime, including Armitage III, AD Police, Battle Angel Alita, and Bubblegum Crisis. If you recognize any of those names, congrats, you're old. This is the stuff I was brought up with. I still give Bubblegum Crisis' "Konya wa Hurricane" a whirl now and again. Battle Angel Alita has been part of my life for something like two-plus decades at this point.

Anton has featured Kentaro Miura's Berserk in his music over the past decade and this album is no exception. With the death of Kentaro Miura earlier this May, it is directly dedicated to his memory. The songs "Dark New World," "To the Last Drop of Blood," and "Broken Survivors" are all based on Berserk.

Best song off the album? By far, "To the Last Drop of Blood." It's a song about Guts' determination to fight. To the last minute, the last moment, the last drop of blood. This is Guts' mission ever since the eclipse. "Highway to Mars" is a close second and even includes a quote from Armitage III. "One Night in Tokyo" and "Moonlight Rendezvous" are both strong songs as well.

Tracklist is as follows:

1. Blade Runner
2. Bella Donna
3. Highway To Mars
4. Hardcore
5. One Night In Tokyo
6. Moonlight Rendezvous
7. Revengeance Machine
8. Dark New World
9. To The Last Drop Of Blood
10. Broken Survivors
11. My Dystopia
12. Battle Hymn (MANOWAR Cover)

Beast in Black will tour next year alongside Nightwish.  This is a long-awaited tour; it's been pushed back at least twice due to world events.  Dates as follows:

5/4/22 Toronto, ON (CA) - History
5/6/22 Montreal, QC (CA) - Mtelus
5/7/22 Lowell, MA - Tsongas Arena
5/8/22 New York, NY - Terminal 5
5/10/22 Silver Spring, MD - The Fillmore
5/12/22 Chicago, IL - Radius
5/13/22 St Paul, MN - The Fillmore
5/15/22 Denver, CO - Mission Ballroom
5/18/22 San Francisco, CA - The Warfield
5/20/22 Los Angeles, CA - The Wiltern
5/21/22 Los Angeles, CA - The Wiltern

Do check out Beast in Black's other two albums, Berserker and From Hell with Love. There's plenty more Berserk on those albums too.

Concert report: FLOW @ CrunchyRoll Expo 2019 https://t-ono.net/music/concert-report-flow-crunchyroll-expo-2019.html https://t-ono.net/music/concert-report-flow-crunchyroll-expo-2019.html Concert report: FLOW @ CrunchyRoll Expo 2019

FLOW took the stage and performed at Crunchyroll Expo in San Jose on August 30th.  This was FLOW’s third time performing in San Jose with the first and second at Fanime Con in 2010 and 2011. It's been eight years since then. The concert was sold out with approximately 2,000 people in attendance.

flow01

The concert was held in one of the panel rooms at the convention center which was fairly new to me. The stage was facing straight to the back with chairs aligned. Seating was not assigned so it was first come first serve. For a rock concert having chairs still set up was very interesting.

FLOW came on stage and started the concert with “Sign”, the sixth opening song for anime Naruto Shippunden. The concert's setlist was based on the band's many famous anime songs such as “COLORS”, the opening for Code Geass, and "BURN," the opening for Tales of Berseria.

flow04

The band also added an intro where each of the members played solo pieces. For his guitar solo, TAKE (Gt) came on stage with light sticks and flashing glasses and danced with the crowd to the song “FROGS~Keronpa Teikoku no Gyakushu~”.

KEIGO (Vo) made sure that everyone in the crowd could understand and used English throughout most of his MC.

flow02

The fans went crazy when FLOW performed their cover of “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” which lead to one of their first anime songs, “GO!!!”
Even after the band had left the stage, the crowd called them back in for an encore. The encore was FLOW's cover of Siam Shade’s “⅓ no Junjou na Kanjou”, which was the anime theme song of Ruroni Kenshin.

Since FLOW has many other famous anime songs I would have like to hear their latest single “Neiro”. Of course we can not forget that they did come out with an album that was released earlier this year in April, called “TRIBALYTHM”.

Hopefully FLOW will return to California soon and play in an even bigger sold-out venue next time.

The full setlist:

Sign - Naruto Shippuden 6th OP
虹の空 (Niji no Sora)- Naruto Shippuden 34th OP
Re:member - Naruto 8th OP
WORLD END - Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 2nd OP
COLORS - Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion 1st OP

TRIBALYTHM Band Inst.
風ノ唄 (Kaze no Uta) - Tales of Zestiria the X 1st OP
光追いかけて (Hikari Oikakete) - Image song for Live Spectacle Naruto
BURN - Tales of Berseria OP

Introduce of FLOW
HERO〜希望の歌〜 (Kibou no Uta) - Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods
CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA - Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods
GO!!! - Naruto 4th OP
1/3の純情な感情 (⅓ no Junjou na Kanjou) - Cover song of Siam Shade

Dance and vocal group MADKID is composed of five members who performed for the first time in the United States at Crunchyroll Expo on September 1st. The quintet features both singers and rappers and all of the members execute their dancing with a crispness second to none.  They appeared twice during the expo and we were there for both.

CIG IMG035

MADKID might be better known to anime fans as the group behind the opening songs for the anime Rising of the Shield Hero and were featured as the opening act for The Rising of the Shield Hero's Special Stage Event at Crunchyroll Expo. They performed both of the songs "Rise" and "Faith" which were the first and the second opening themes for the anime.  The group consists of three vocalists (YOU-TA, SHIN, and KAZUKI) and two rappers (LIN and YUKI).  Both LIN and YUKI are bilingual which enhances the group's flexibility.  The group incorporates trap and glitch hop giving them a new type of sound and visual experience.

They also performed a special program at Crunchyroll City's Nightclub. They first sang "Rise" on stage with the crowd going crazy, some singing together. This was followed by a short Q&A session inquiring how they are enjoying their first time in San Jose and their favorite foods. YOU-TA answered with Natto (fermented soy bean), and YUKI answered with cheese. There was a slight laugh when KAZUKI answered with inari sushi which is a bean curd sushi made out of fried tofu packets. After their Q&A they finished off with "Faith" and high-fived fans before leaving the stage.

MADKID's appearances might have been short and sweet but their impact on Crunchyroll Expo is way bigger than the time on stage might suggest.  Expect more anime work from them in the future.  In April they released their first album CIRCUS which includes English versions of "Rise" and "Faith."  The group made their major record debut with Nippon Columbia Records in 2018.

Please check out their YouTube channel and website for more information about the group and to listen to some of their music!

Man With a Mission - "Dark Crow" S2 Opening Song for Vinland Saga announced https://t-ono.net/music/man-with-a-mission-dark-crow-s2-opening-song-for-vinland-saga-announced.html https://t-ono.net/music/man-with-a-mission-dark-crow-s2-opening-song-for-vinland-saga-announced.html Man With a Mission - "Dark Crow" S2 Opening Song for Vinland Saga announced

Man With a Mission has an announcement right on the eve of the start of their Chasing the Horizon Tour - North American leg: their song "Dark Crow" will be featured as the second opening song for the anime adapter of Vinland Saga.

Vinland Saga as a whole has been serialized for 14 years. The anime adaptation of Vinland Saga has been running for about two months so far and the second season will start on September 29. As mentioned earlier the opening will be "Dark Crow" by Man With a Mission and it is paired with "Drown" by milet. Milet and Man With a Mission will also collaborate on the song "Reiwa." The single will be released on October 23 and also includes the tracks "86 Missed Calls" featuring Patrick Stump (who Man With a Mission worked with on "Dead End in Tokyo") and Man With a Missions' "My Hero" as remixed by EDM artist Slushii.  If you've never read or watched Vinland Saga take a look.  It's full of vikings, fighting, revenge, and... farms.  Okay, not yet, but eventually.  Longtime fans you know what I mean.

Read on for a few tidbits of info from the artists themselves:

<Comment from Jean-Ken Johnny>
WE HAVE THE PLEASURE OF TAKING ON THE OPENING THEME OF Vinland Saga ANIME SERIES.

IT IS A VERY EPIC STORY OF VENGEANCE SET IN THE MEDIEVAL VIKING ERA; IT IS ALSO A HEROIC TALE THAT GOES BEYOND REVENGE. AS A GUY, IT IS AN HONOR FOR ME TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BE A PART OF SUCH A COOL WORK. I’D BE GLAD IF YOU COULD ENJOY “Dark Crow” ALONG WITH THE ANIME.

<Comment from Kamikaze Boy>

WHEN I FIRST HEARD milet’S VOICE, I KNEW THAT HERE WAS ANOTHER ARTIST WHO WOULD PERSONIFY AND LEAD THE NEW ERA. THIS TIME, UPON MAKING THE NEW SONG “Reiwa”, SOMEHOW I HAD milet’S VOICE OVERLAPPING THE IMAGE OF THE SONG WHILE COMPOSING THE MELODY. SO I TALKED ABOUT IT WITH EVERYONE AND TOOK THE COURAGE TO ASK HER.

AS SOON AS milet’S VOICE WAS IN THE SONG, I FELT THAT SOMETHING LIKE AN ENTHUSIASM OF A NEW ERA WAS BREATHED INTO THE SONG. I ALREADY LOOK FORWARD TO THE DAY THAT WE PERFORM TOGETHER NOT ONLY ON AUDIO BUT ALSO ON STAGE AND DELIVER THE SONG DIRECTLY TO YOU ALL!!

<Comment from milet>

When I first heard “Reiwa”, my heart was swayed by the straightforward and tenderly enveloping voice and the epic and powerful sound that gave me an image of a bright and dazzling world opening up wide. I sang the song making the wish for peace and enjoying the happiness of living in the new era of Reiwa. And I am simply happy that I was able to blend into the sound of MAN WITH A MISSION, a band that have always been my big favorite. Please look forward to the fusion of MAN WITH A MISSION and milet.

Hyuna "The Queen's Back" Tour Report (SF & LA) 2017 https://t-ono.net/music/hyuna-the-queen-s-back-tour-report-sf-la-2017.html https://t-ono.net/music/hyuna-the-queen-s-back-tour-report-sf-la-2017.html Hyuna "The Queen's Back" Tour Report (SF & LA) 2017

Hyuna winded down her first North American tour in San Francisco and Los Angeles. did you miss it? If so fear not Wave-K is to the rescue with photos, video, and coverage. Hyuna following the restructuring of CUBE Entertainment has become the face of the agency. Hyuna doesn’t disappoint live either, if this is how most of her live performances go she deserves a little more credit in the industry. It’s very easy with all the K-POP idols and groups coming to North America for good shows and artists to fly under the radar.

In San Francisco at The Regency Ballroom Hyuna fans (A-ings) who had attended other shows at the venue may have immediately noticed some differences regarding the barrier between the stage and crowd. That difference was that it was much closer than usual. If you looked at some of Hyuna’s earlier performances in the tour you may notice those were modified too. Hyuna has been lauded as the queen of fan service and after this performance and L.A. I'd have to confirm this to be true.  During her opening song “Roll Deep,” which had to be restarted due to technical difficulties that were already occurring before the start of the show, she interacted with fans explaining that this was the first time the music had actually cut off on her in the middle of the performance. Having been to many concerts in the past, when something like that happens the artist usually moves to the next song.  This wasn’t the case; despite the fact that Hyuna actually was almost finished with “Roll Deep” she ordered it to restart completely as in the entire concert opening.  Attendees may have also received an update on twitter that Hyuna had requested that the show be held in its entirety despite the errors.

Hyuna had different outfits for each stop, a different set-up on stage for each venue, and a different way she interacted with the crowd during each venue. Non-uniformity made this tour fun for the fans and showed us a side of Hyuna we’ve never seen before. In Los Angeles Hyuna took fan interaction to a different level with a stage setup that confused even the security guards at The NOVO. Security actually had to ask fans what was going on as the steps from the stage went directly into the crowd with no barrier in the center between the fans and Hyuna. On more than one occasion she would come down the steps and make the audience feel like they were part of the performance, and in some ways completely shattering the norm for K-POP performances especially by a female idol. Generally you’ll see an idol male or female keep a certain amount of distance between them and fans, Hyuna either is extremely brave and trusting of her fans or has some of the most well behaved fans in K-POP, or a combination of the two. With the exception of a few misbehaving attendees before the show and during the meet and greet there were no incidents.

Speaking of performance, as noted earlier about the technical difficulties in the beginning at The Regency, Hyuna appeared uncomfortable at first, and more than one source claims that she was actually feeling under the weather that night. As the performance continued, she looked more energetic and relaxed.  It’s worth noting that Hyuna performed the song "French Kiss" off her A-Talk album. The choreography has never been posted to CUBE unlike many of her songs that have been performed in the past. After seeing this performed twice I have to wonder why this wasn’t a feature track on the album. No choreography or music video has appeared online for "A-talk" and "U&ME" either. Hyuna told her audience that they may not be interested in the next song before performing these two tracks. The sharpness of the choreography suggests that possibly there’s a dance for all of her songs released. "U&ME" is the ultimate fan service song and it appeared as if that’s what she was going for as she interacted with the crowd a lot here holding hands with fan boys etc.

Oh and what’s an audience interaction without games? Fans were invited to ask her a question before the show, put it on a sticky note and maybe Hyuna would answer. We learned a little about Hyuna from this. Hyuna prefers shoes to heels, is an avid reader, and likes the Simpsons. Hyuna would also take questions from the crowd. The other two games included a dance contest and the other was a how well do you know Hyuna game where contestants tried to guess the same answer as Hyuna.  If you got one of those coveted spots on stage you were already a winner because most the contestants took selfie with Hyuna. The winner of the question game received a signed Polaroid of Hyuna that she actually kisses before handing it off to the winner. The dance contest winner got signed merch like a hoodie and a hat.

Unfortunately there are a few elements that San Francisco missed out on as the Regency Ballroom is a flat open floor space. This layout didn’t allow for her to come off stage and interact with fans the way she did in Los Angeles. Another element missed out was Hyuna starting her performance by throwing a jacket into the crowd, Los Angeles got a much more organized show as well as venue staff at the Novo did a very good job with line control and answering questions. For example by comparison, the meet and greet photo op was much more controlled than in San Francisco where the staff had difficulty getting people in a single file line. The Novo had several lines for the photo op where people were split into groups of 12. The group of 12 thing continues to puzzle me. For Apink last year 12 people made sense for the photo as there’s more than one member but with Hyuna there’s only one idol. I think groups of 4 to 8 people per photo would have been more ideal. Staff did have to remind a few badly behaved fans not to be taking photos and video during the hi-touch, it was to a point that there were threats that they would stop the meet and greet.

The setlist for the show was fairly short, something A-ings don’t really understand as Hyuna has a discography long enough to have a 12-14 song concert. The fan interaction and games made the show enjoyable, and while this may be a once in a lifetime experience for North American fans, we certainly hope Hyuna will make a second run of touring here. It’s still early in the year but the “Queen is Back” tour could easily be a candidate for concert of the year even with the influx of K-Pop coming to this side of the world in the next couple of months.

ONE OK ROCK announces final details for their North American "Ambitions" tour https://t-ono.net/music/one-ok-rock-announces-final-details-for-their-north-american-ambitions-tour.html https://t-ono.net/music/one-ok-rock-announces-final-details-for-their-north-american-ambitions-tour.html ONE OK ROCK announces final details for their North American "Ambitions" tour

ONE OK ROCK will begin their North American headline tour in support of new album "Ambitions" in just under two weeks. This marks the fourth US tour in two years but the first where they are the main draw. Previous efforts saw them play alongside bands like All Time Low, Sleeping with Sirens, and Crown the Empire for the Back to the Future Hearts tour and Monster Energy Outbreak tour respectively.  Their most recent lives had the band tour as the support for 5 Seconds of Summer.  This new tour will find the band show up in many major cities including New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and ends in Seattle.

The San Francisco show will be at The Warfield theater on Market Street on January 22 (Sunday).  The band has announced that they will be accompanied by CRUISR, OUR LAST NIGHT, and ACCEPTANCE as support bands. CRUISR will handle New York, Toronto, and Chicago with OUR LAST NIGHT covering California shows and ACCEPTANCE the Seattle show.  The band will then move onward to a huge Japan tour that goes all the way to May.

ONE OK ROCK has had an ever-evolving sound in the dozen years they have been around and "Ambitions" follows this line.  It's both familiar yet different from their previous efforts and shows a band that does not rest on their laurels and continues to gain traction around the world.  The four-man unit led by Takahiro "Taka" Moriuchi has quickly found themself a place in America thanks to their albums "Zankyo Reference" and "Jinsei×Boku=" and work with franchises including Black Rock Shooter and Rurouni Kenshin.  "Ambitions" will be officially released on January 13 by Fueled by Ramen, a sublabel of the Warner Music Group. There are both Japanese and English language versions.  This marks the second album released as part of the Warner Music Group (the other being 2015's "35xxxv").
