AX has its roots in Northern California from Anime Con, which was held in San Jose, California in 1991. In 1992 SPJA managed to acquire rights to Anime Con, and in 1994 they moved the location from Northern California down to Southern California. Since then it has attracted fans, guests, artists, exhibitors, cosplayers, press, and creators from all over the world; granting it the title of the largest anime convention in North America.
Thanks to the growing popularity of anime and manga in the U.S., AX continues to dominate attendance records and helps to promote upcoming series and novels for various artists and groups. AX is known for its large size and numerous guests from Japan such as the elusive CLAMP, who made their U.S. debut in 2006 at AX during their highly anticipated panel interview. AX also brings in hundreds of exhibitors, selling rare and highly coveted anime merchandise to collectors and con-goers.
AX also draws in crowds of Anime Music Video (AMV) creators hoping to gain recognition and experience by competing in their annual AMV Contest help during the convention. Anime Expo continues to be one of the largest anime conventions in the world, helping to spread and ignite the popularity of Japanese animation since 1994.
