Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage is a new spinoff of the Warriors series from Tecmo Koei. It combines characters from the Fist of the North Star manga with the hack and slash action fans have grown to love from Koei’s iconic series. We checked out the demo at E3 to see how the two mesh together.

Ken’s Rage will be a breath of fresh air for fans of the Warriors, since it won’t have any of the weapon collection aspect of previous games. Instead, it will focus on the skill point system, where players will be awarded points after defeating a boss or finishing a level, amongst other tasks. These can be allotted towards different stats, powering characters up. The most noticeable difference, however, is the addition of different ougi or musou attacks for characters. Players can equip up to four that can be interchangeable, which helps players adapt to different levels of the same stage. Fans of Fist of the North Star will be happy to know that these have been faithfully recreated from the manga.

Characters can now interact with environments in new ways. Walls can be scaled. Gates can be destroyed. Certain weapons can be grabbed and used to clear groups of enemies or help take down larger enemies. This brings on the next new aspect of Ken’s Rage: the inclusion of giant enemies. These have an armor that must be destroyed before players can actually damage them. It will be interesting to see how these will be implemented throughout the game. It certainly beats the days of fighting Lu Bu, who wouldn’t even flinch and just unfairly strike back.

There has also been more attention to detail this time around. Characters’ clothes get destroyed with damage, bodies begin to show wear and tear as the level goes on. Fans will also be happy to find that there is both a Legend Mode and Dream Mode. The former follows the Fist of the North Star story, while the latter features an original story.

Tecmo Koei clearly made this game not only to satisfy Fist of the North Star fans, but to explore new grounds with the Warriors series. Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage releases Fall 2010 for both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
