While our staff was in Seattle covering Sakura-Con 2013, they had the fortunate chance to attend a more informal reception with Reki Kawahara. The collective information from the reception has been compiled here.

Please take note that the following information about Reki Kawahara was collected in a group environment and summarized from memory, so there might be inaccuracies. Questions here were posed by various individuals at the reception.

  1. Tin Writer from Accel World was his first and probably his last time doing any voice acting. It was a once in a lifetime role he said.
  2. The inspiration for Yuniko and her complex personality came from Hidaka Rina (Yuniko’s voice actor). Yuniko represents the most popular gap between the real world and the fantasy world. Hence why her personality is so polarized.
  3. When he finishes writing both series (Sword Art Online and Accel World), he may go back and write a brand new original series that bridges the two together.
  4. When asked about whether Kuroyukihime is indeed the daughter of Asuna and Kirito, he said it would be extremely unlikely. According to canon, Kuroyukihime does not have a great relationship with her parents and her family-life is presented as torn.  If Kuroyukihime is indeed the daughter of the two, then it means Asuna and Kirito did not end in a happy marriage.
  5. He had the most fun writing for Klein in Sword Art Online and Yuniko from Accel World.
  6. Kuroyukihime and her butterfly avatar is based off of a Chinese story called 胡蝶之夢.
  7. He finds writing characters like Haruyuki a challenge.
  8. He thinks that if Haruyuki was more slender and good-looking, maybe the series would sell better. Apparently Accel World is not very popular among the Japanese either.
  9. At time of discussion, he had just submitted Vol. 14 of Accel World to his editor.
  10. He thinks being a scenario writer for video games is a really hard job.
  11. He has played Starcraft and he enjoys Diablo III.  His character class in Diablo III is Demon Hunter.
  12. He is disappointed that Starcraft 2 is split into 3 games. He plays Protoss in Starcraft 2.
  13. He likes the story of Diablo III.
  14. His favorite MMORPG is World of Warcraft. He compliments that the world of the game is so huge. He thinks there are a lot of quests.
  15. Dean Koontz is an author he really respects.
  16. He had time to visit the Museum of Flight while he was in Seattle. He liked it very much.
  17. He is currently using a Samsung Galaxy S3.

And that is all we have for you!  Be sure to check out our Reki Kawahara Press Conference and Panel coverage for official Q&A!
