Qliphah in Providence's Shadow Hands On Preview - Anime Expo 2026

Arc System Works completely shifts gears with Qliphah in Providence's Shadow, a tactical RPG that stole the spotlight at Anime Expo 2026. Known for their lightning-fast, visually stunning fighting games, the studio brings that same signature aesthetic precision and dramatic flair to a grid-based battlefield. From my brief hands-on demo, it’s clear that Qliphah isn't just a standard turn-based strategy game; it combines deep, cerebral positioning with a dark, atmospheric narrative that immediately hooked me.

The game’s tactical dynamic is anchored by its two dual protagonists, who offer vastly different combat styles based on how they distort space. On the other hand, Soma Hoshigami is a mutant stuck in a volatile, "half-turned" monstrous state; he fights with raw, aggressive hand-to-hand combat, unconsciously warping the environment around him to manifest conceptual fangs and jaws through his heavy punches and kicks.

The tactical depth of Qliphah really shines during its massive boss encounters, as seen in a high-stakes battle against a colossal tentacle monster from the demo. Rather than relying on standard turn-based tropes, the combat centers around a dynamic, screen-spanning timeline gauge that forecasts the exact timing and nature of incoming enemy strikes. This forces you to play both offense and defense simultaneously—queuing up your own skills to intercept, disrupt, and counter the boss’s telegraphed actions with the correct color skill. Managing this chaos felt incredibly tactical thanks to an active-pause mechanic reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII Remake, which lets you freeze the action at any moment to dissect the queue, catch your breath, and meticulously map out your next move. Additionally successfully countering attacks builds a Fatal Ruin meter; once it hits 100%, you unleash a devastating super attack.

With its distinct blend of deliberate tactical planning and explosive, high-stakes payoffs, Qliphah in Providence's Shadow is shaping up to be a standout evolution for Arc System Works. The seamless harmony between the active-pause strategy and the adrenaline-pumping game system proves that the studio can bring their signature flair to a completely new genre. If the final game can maintain the intense, rewarding rhythm shown off in this brief demo, strategy fans have a genuinely refreshing tactical RPG to look forward to.
