Final Fantasy Distant Worlds/New World @ Otakon 2018

Distant Worlds and A New World performances are familiar names in the world of video games, and this year at Otakon 2018, they were the main musical performances. This year, we had the privilege to witness both of these performances in one weekend, led by Grammy Award Winner Arnie Roth and his son Eric Roth for their respective concerts. Not only that, they were accompanied by legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu and performed many outstanding scores from the Final Fantasy series on Friday and Sunday afternoon.

The performances were outstanding with many of the classics you’d expect to hear at most Distant Worlds and New World set lists like Zanarkand and One-Winged Angel. At one point, Nobuo Uematsu even joined the choir ensemble to sing along with the audience during One-Winged Angel in the Distant Worlds Concert. This really brought the audience engagement to another level as everyone was singing along to the song. The other notable song that you can’t sit through a Final Fantasy concert without hearing is the Chocobo Medley. The Medley provided a very light-hearted ending to the New World concert and Otakon itself that left smiles on audience’s faces with its humorous tone.

If you’re a Final Fantasy Fan, your weekend doesn’t end much better than this as many of the songs played also brought a big nostalgic factor. Iconic songs like Liberi Fatali brought me back to the Final Fantasy VIII opening that I’ve watched more times than I can count. Fragments of Memories also held a special place in my heart too as it transported me back to the exact point in Final Fantasy VIII with Laguna’s journey.

The Distant Worlds and New World concerts play at many cities around the world, and if you have not had a chance to experience it, I would highly recommend to give it a try.
