Bandai’s Tamagotchi Paradise (Virtual Pet Device) Review

Bandai’s Tamagotchi Paradise feels like the biggest glow-up the series has had in years. This isn’t just a nostalgia toy — it’s a surprisingly deep virtual pet game that mixes classic caretaking with exploration, progression, and light strategy.

Right out of the box, Paradise feels different. The new zoom dial is immediately the first thing that stands out. Being able to zoom from a microscopic view all the way out to a full planet instantly makes this feel more like a game than a simple digital pet. The device is also much bigger than the older Tamagotchis. There is also a flip off top part for connecting with other devices. Compared to the original Tamagotchi from the 90’s, Paradise still has that familiar Tamagotchi charm, but it is clearly aiming higher.

Instead of raising just one pet, you are managing an ecosystem. Your Tamagotchi lives in a field (Land, Water, Sky, or the latest version, Jade Forrest), and as you play, you unlock more environments and characters. With 50+ characters, 12 species, and thousands of possible variations, there is high replay value. All variations of Paradise will unlock the same ecosystems with the exception of Jade Forrest. Jade Forrest only contains Land, Water, and Forrest – Sky is not available and some items are exclusive only to the Jade Forrest variation.

The breeding and genetics system adds long-term motivation. How you care for your Tamagotchi actually matters, and traits carry over to future generations. This makes Paradise feel less repetitive than older models and more like a progression-based game.

Mini-games and Lab Mode break up the routine of feeding and cleaning, and while none of them are super complex, they add variety and keep the experience engaging. The mini-games earn in-game currency for making purchases for your pet (food items, meals, deco items, toys, pet-sitter etc). There are also Egg-Hunts. Think of Egg-Hunts as dailies and doing them every day for gathering special food for your pet.

Connecting devices with friends is a nice feature. Interactions like breeding or emergency events make the game feel more alive and social — especially fun if you know other Tamagotchi fans. You can exchange gifts and arrange for playdates.

Replay value is strong thanks to the sheer number of unlockables and genetic combinations. That said, some players may still find the core loop repetitive after long sessions.

Pros

  • Unique zoom and planet mechanics with breeding and character variety
  • Mini-games comes in different difficulty level
  • A leveling system that creates a sense of progression
  • Fun social connectivity – gift exchange, playdates
  • Animations are gorgeous and full of character

Cons

  • Gameplay can still feel repetitive over time
  • Full experience may require multiple versions or friends
  • LCD screen scratches easily. The dial also begins to loosen over time.

Tamagotchi Paradise successfully modernizes the franchise without losing its nostalgic charm. It’s deeper, more customizable, and more game-like than past entries, making it appealing to both longtime fans and new players.
