Just like transportation, your options are broken into public and private: crash on someone’s couch, or get a room at a hotel. Unlike public transportation, there’s no guarantee that one will be more comfortable than the other. How much space you get is determined by how many people you’re sharing the room with, and both options have their share of limitations on showering, food access, and other little details. The main things you need to consider is which option you can afford, and which provides you the space you need.

If there is one thing that Fanime 2012 will be remembered for, I am going to bet the general registration line is high on many people’s lists. While I understand that there was a power outage on Thursday, it was still a great test of patience to wait in line for five and a half hours simply to hand over your money to get in on Saturday. There were more than a few families who in the end decided to forego the line and simply spend the day outside the convention. It was my first Fanime, and I am sure that given the mass of people who waited in line with me, pre-registration was likely an afterthought for newcomers. If nothing else, the staff and volunteers were for the most part gracious, though it does nothing to change the disaster that was their pitiful logistical effort. To be fair, the Fanime staff didn’t want a power outage, but poor planning meant that a lot of people who toughed out the line ended up wasting the better part of the day. If I was a parent, such a poor show of forethought would certainly dampen my enthusiasm on making Fanime an annual family outing. If nothing else, Fanime can pat itself on the back for having hammered home the point that pre-registration is the better route.
Kia Asamiya is an unique artist who has worked on American comics such as Batman and X-Men. Back home in Japan, he has work on popular manga titles like Silent Mobius and Martian Successor Nadesico. While at this year's FanimeCon, we caught up with the man and discussed briefly about some of the differences between American and Japanese works and also a little about his current titles in Japan. Transportation is the first and often hardest roadblock to overcome. If you’re still trying to decide how to get to a convention, break your options into public transportation and private; there are variations on both, and each one has its own pros and cons.
For fans of manga and anime, announcements from both Aninplex USA and Viz Media at Fanime 2012 were sure to please, though both definitely cause a bit of hurt on their wallets. With upcoming releases that will excite old and new fans, both Aniplex and Viz have a little something for everyone.
Being unprepared in general is an unpleasant experience, but when your enjoyment of a convention is at stake, having key items means the difference between a satisfying experience and utter misery. What will you do if a swarm of bees attacks the convention and you’re left without something as basic as Benadryl? That may sound funny and implausible, but it has happened. If your convention is farther than you can reach within an hour or two and you’re staying at a hotel, you’ll definitely need to pay close attention to this list.
