feature where-to-eat

Deciding what to eat might seem as easy as stuffing your bag with your favorite snacks and bringing cash for a few restaurants, but you’d be surprised at how hard it is to keep food costs down and energy levels up. While wandering the halls of a convention is nowhere near as hard as running a twenty-six mile marathon, keeping hydrated and energized are important nonetheless. There will be a lot of shuffling, standing, and walking, so if you don’t do a little bit of planning with food, your experience can turn very sour very fast. The right food will not only save you money, but boost your longevity and keep you active right till bedtime.

Where can you find tengu, chupacabra and crop circles all in one place? Waldstein Academy of course! NIS America’s recent release, Occult Academy, focuses on the abnormal and unexplainable phenomena that happen in Waldstein Academy, or “Occult Academy” as it is called by the individuals who live nearby. Occult Academy focuses on Maya Kumashiro and time traveler Fumiaki Uchida as they scour the city looking for the key of Nostradamus that will cause an alien invasion on July 21, 1999 while battling against all the occult creatures that get in their way.

feature where-to-stay

Just like transportation, your options are broken into public and private: crash on someone’s couch, or get a room at a hotel. Unlike public transportation, there’s no guarantee that one will be more comfortable than the other. How much space you get is determined by how many people you’re sharing the room with, and both options have their share of limitations on showering, food access, and other little details. The main things you need to consider is which option you can afford, and which provides you the space you need.

news fanimecon-2012

If there is one thing that Fanime 2012 will be remembered for, I am going to bet the general registration line is high on many people’s lists. While I understand that there was a power outage on Thursday, it was still a great test of patience to wait in line for five and a half hours simply to hand over your money to get in on Saturday. There were more than a few families who in the end decided to forego the line and simply spend the day outside the convention. It was my first Fanime, and I am sure that given the mass of people who waited in line with me, pre-registration was likely an afterthought for newcomers. If nothing else, the staff and volunteers were for the most part gracious, though it does nothing to change the disaster that was their pitiful logistical effort. To be fair, the Fanime staff didn’t want a power outage, but poor planning meant that a lot of people who toughed out the line ended up wasting the better part of the day. If I was a parent, such a poor show of forethought would certainly dampen my enthusiasm on making Fanime an annual family outing. If nothing else, Fanime can pat itself on the back for having hammered home the point that pre-registration is the better route.

feature how-youre-getting-there

Transportation is the first and often hardest roadblock to overcome. If you’re still trying to decide how to get to a convention, break your options into public transportation and private; there are variations on both, and each one has its own pros and cons.
